Metropolis 2 meets the master of message
When Alastair Campbell was looking for heavyweight support for his trip to Birmingham he turned to James Manning of Birmingham PR and marketing agency, Metropolis 2. Weighing in at seventeen stone and being 6' 4" tall, James was literally the most heavyweight practitioner Alastair was able to find. An interview with veteran broadcaster Ed Doolan was the first port of call during Alastair Campbell's Birmingham visit. After Pebble Mill, Alastair, who had earlier been briefed on Birmingham 's inner city regeneration by Council Leader Sir Albert Bore, was shown around the city centre on a visit organised by local MP, Steve McCabe. Mr Campbell worked briefly in the city in the 1980s and said it was transformed. "I was hugely impressed by the revival of the City centre," said Alastair. "You get the feel of a place that is really going places. It shows what can be done with strong local leadership and drive and a private sector committed to making a project work." James commented: "While PR practitioners work with their clients on developing strategic messages they themselves often remain in the background. Alastair, however, has found himself being as much of interest to the media as his client's messages. It was therefore interesting to meet him and compare the person to the media-driven perception. "It was also pleasurable that his reaction to Birmingham was so justly positive and I agree with him that Birmingham should see itself as a premier European city rather than comparing itself with cities in England. Metropolis 2 personnel work hard at promoting the city and its facilities to their clients and to date this has seen clients run events in the city at a number of venues including the International Convention Centre and the Hyatt Hotel. Alastair is a regular visitor to the city so I hope to catch up with him when he is next here.
